Keeping Your Elderly Loved Ones Safe

A family member, a caretaker, a nurse, and a doctor can all commit elder abuse against your loved one. Older Americans are losing $2.9 billion dollars as estimated in 2008.

According to the study, over half of the abusers are strangers but 34% are family, friends and neighbors. Elderly women are at the top of the hit list as well as elderly between the ages of 80 to 89. Those looking to harm the elderly can be anywhere. Many victims have been harmed in shopping malls, grocery stores, banks, etc. Most perpetrators choose their victims by their vulnerabilities. Canes, handicap, or any other physical impairment are just flags for predators to prey on. The worst types of abuse are the physical and sexual violence that the elderly can suffer when they are victims of violence. It is important to teach your loved ones about safety and what to do in order to prevent them from being victimized. For example: stay active and socializing with friends, avoid isolation, keep all legal and important papers in a safe and secure location, and try to get another independent person to review your finances.

Despite all the warnings signs and awareness that is out there about people who are trying to take advantage of your loved ones, these incidents are still occurring at an alarming rate. When your loved one’s trust is broken, the emotional and financial strain it can put on them is immeasurable and should be discussed with a professional.

Nanny Cam Evidence in Nursing Home Shows Abuse Incident

Three aides in a Pennsylvania nursing home were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, neglect of a care-dependent person, and several other charges in connection with an incident that occurred in the nursing home. A nanny cam placed in one of the residents’ rooms showed a female patient being mocked and assaulted as she tried to escape from her room.

The 78-year-old woman’s family left a clock with a hidden camera inside to keep an eye on the woman’s safety. 22-year-old Samirah Traynham, 21-year-old Tyrina Griffin, and 19-year-old Ayesha Muhammad were all arrested in connection with this incident. Traynham allegedly physically abused the elderly woman, striking her in the face and head. The elderly woman’s daughter and son-in-law also found and photographed several bruises on the woman’s body.

Hidden cameras, or “nanny cams” installed in an elderly person’s room in a nursing home or in their home are an excellent way to ensure their safety. “Nanny cams” are becoming more and more popular because they easily provide irrefutable video evidence to use against perpetrators of elder abuse. They are very useful tools to assist the elderly in any abuse cases in order for them to get the compensation that they deserve. With nanny cams implemented in certain nursing homes, it will remove the facility’s ability to deny any claims made against it. Nobody deserves to suffer physical or emotional scars due to abuse and implementing nanny cams could possibly ensure they don’t have to suffer.

93-Year-Old Woman Abused in Nursing Home

A caretaker at the Carolina House nursing home has been accused of elder abuse after allegedly verbally and physically abusing a 93-year-old woman at the nursing home. 41-year-old Sonia King turned herself in to the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday the 13th and was charged with 3 counts of abuse of a vulnerable adult in connection with the incident.

King reportedly gave the woman a bloody nose at one point. An investigation has been conducted to determine if there were any other victims of abuse at King’s hands. Another employee reported seeing King verbally and physically abusing two other female patients, ages 70 and 79, at the nursing home in the past. King now faces 5 years in jail for each count against her.

When a person decides to live in a Nursing Home, it is an important decision because the care could be long term or short term. Safety and proper medical care are essential to the quality of life for the elderly residing in a home. When making this decision, it is extremely important that you look into the history of the facility including if there are any incidents of abuse; physical, verbal or emotional abuse, against any employees at the facility. It is important to ensure that the facility has no complaints to avoid potential cases of abuse against your loved ones.

Nursing Home Aid Jailed for Beating Resident

In Lufkin, TX a nursing home employee was arrested on Wednesday for alleged abuse of an elderly resident. 43-year-old Sherree Denise Jones worked at Grace Care Center Nursing Home as a certified nurse aid when the alleged incident occurred on August 21st

She had taken an 83-year-old woman into the shower room when two other certified nurse aids said that they heard crying from the elderly woman and head her telling Davis to stop hitting her the report stated. The two witnesses stated that they heard Davis slap the elderly woman five times and when they rushed to see what happened they saw the elderly woman extremely red and they saw Davis pulling her hair causing her extreme pain. She was also reported pulling on the elderly woman’s ear and the victim had a knot on her head. The administrator at Grace Care Center Nursing Home notified Lufkin Police Department immediately of the incident and filed a report with the state agency that monitors nursing homes. The resident who suffered the injuries is doing fine, and Davis is currently in Angelina County Jail.

Nursing homes are supposed to be trustful and a safe place for your loved ones. No family should ever have to go through hearing about an abuse incident that injured a loved one. If your loved one was injured in nursing home, they deserve compensation for their injuries. An Arizona personal injury attorney can help your family through this difficult time by fighting against the parties responsible for your loved one’s injuries.

Florida Man Faces Lawsuit For Unlicensed Practice

According to Newyourkinjurynews.com, a Florida woman has filed a lawsuit against a man claiming to be a doctor after she suffered burns to her underarms following inferior laser hair removal treatment. According to the report, 22-year-old Monica Jimenez is suing Larry DeJesus after she suffered second and third-degree burns from the treatment

The report states that DeJesus falsely identified himself as a licensed doctor and performed the botched treatment on Jimenez. Jimenez also filed a complaint with the State Department of Health when the burn wounds she suffered got worse. Jimenez is suing for an unspecified amount in damages.

This is not the first incident of a person putting their safety in the hands of a person they believe is a licensed doctor and undergoing procedures that could cause extremely serious injury. For that reason, it is always important to ensure that any procedure you are undergoing is being performed by a fully licensed doctor. Many procedures could potentially cause a fatality if the person performing the procedure is untrained in the process. Medical procedures often carry a significant risk of injury to begin with, nobody should ever have to face increased risk of serious injury or fatality resulting from negligence from an unlicensed medical practitioner.

Nursing Home Abuse in Arizona

Arizona is one of the few states in the country that has a unique statutory definition of “abuse” of nursing home patients.

“Abuse” means:

1. Intentional infliction of physical harm.
2. Injury caused by negligent acts or omissions.
3. Sexual abuse or sexual assault.

This definition is broader than the common definition of abuse and therefore includes what would ordinarily be classified as simple negligence. This expanded definition is helpful in asserting claims for poor care given to Arizona nursing home patients.
