Caretaker Steals Elderly Woman's Checks and Then Kills Her

It is devastating for any family to lose their loved one because a caretaker’s abuse and neglect. In Rock Hill, SC a 30-year-old caretaker was arrested and charged with murder of an 82-year-old woman.

The day before the elderly woman was murdered, she had talked to police about stolen checks. She had given police a print out of the checks that had been cashed over a period of time from her bank account. She had noticed that the signature on the checks did not match her own and told police that the checks had been made out to the caretaker in the facility. The four checks totaled to $1,280. The woman was found dead in her shower at the assisted living center where she was living. She was badly bruised, with injuries that were not consistent with a typical fall in a shower. She was found around 6:35am by the nursing staff and they attempted CPR to revive her and also called for help. Police arrested the caretaker while she was driving home in connection to the stolen checks and the murder. The caretaker had access to all of the resident’s apartments.

It is tragic that this type of incident occurred to this innocent woman. It is important to also question whether or not the assisted living care facility should have suspended the worker immediately upon being notified of the check incident. Or in the very least, prevent the worker from having any contact with the elderly woman. A simple step by the assisted living care facility could have saved this woman. This situation is a perfect example of how inaction and neglect can result in horrible outcome. If your loved one was harmed by a caretaker then contacting a professional to evaluate who was negligent and who failed to protect your loved one is the best step for your family to receive justice and to prevent this occurrence from happening again.

Caretaker Steals From Elderly Woman for Cocaine

Most people do not realize that even when they hire through a professional service to receive a caretaker for your loved one, they can still be deceived. A live-in caretaker has the access to all your loved one’s personal belongings and the most intimate possessions. It is crucial that you do appropriate background checks when choosing a caretaker for your loved one and to make sure that they can be trusted.

A 39-year-old caretaker in Kentucky was hired through Home Instead Senior care to care for an elderly female. Police records have stated that the caretaker was cashing checks totaling $677 from the victim. The caretaker worked in the victim’s house Monday through Friday and had access to her financial documents and all her financial matters. In a statement to police, the caretaker told police that she used the money she stole in order to buy cocaine. The woman is now charged with exploitation of an adult. The owner of the Home Instead franchise told reporters that the caretaker is no longer employed with them and that they have reimbursed the elderly woman for her losses. They also stated that she was given a drug screening prior to her hiring.

Although the company who had employed the woman to care for the elderly woman stated she had received a drug screening, there was still no mention of how often employees are required to submit to these drug tests. When you are employing someone to care for another individual and you are aware of how much access they will have to their financial matters, there should be extra steps like mandatory drug testing before they are placed in a home that could prevent these types of situations.

Florida Nurse Charged with Four Counts of Elder Abuse

In Highlands County a Florida woman was charged with four counts of elder abuse after she reportedly abused an elderly man on four separate occasions. The four incidents occurred within a span of one month at a care facility used to help physically or mentally disabled adults that require ‘round-the-clock medical assistance.

Witnesses at the care facility stated they saw the woman pluck the elderly man’s pubic hair with her hands when he was uncooperative when she was changing his diaper. Facility workers said the man was unable to speak or defend himself against the woman. The woman was subsequently fired from her job at the facility when the supervisor found out about these incidents. Her bail at Highlands County jail was set at $20,000.

There are always times when people are uncooperative for one reason or another. This is especially true for elderly adults who, for the greater part of their lives, were used to doing things for themselves. When a person reaches old age, it is often difficult for them to succumb to the idea that they must let go of some of their independence and allow others to assist them with certain parts of their daily lives. Unfortunately, some medical assistants and nursing home workers find this too difficult to deal with and often react in abusive or harmful ways against the elderly person. However, a lack of cooperation from the elderly person is no excuse for physically harming or injuring them. Every step should be taken to make their lives easier for them and help them maintain good health and at least some of their independence whenever possible. The perpetrators of elder abuse and neglect should always be brought to justice for the harm and danger that they put elderly individuals through.

Elderly Woman Left to Die While Daughter Goes On Vacation

As you get older it can be difficult to admit that you need help or that you have to rely on another person to do the simple tasks you used to do everyday. Some elderly individuals entrust their family members with their care and well-being and assume that you are in good hands. Unfortunately in some cases family members will neglect or endanger their elderly family members and cause them physical and emotional anguish in the process.

In Australia, an elderly woman was left in the care of her daughter who is a registered nurse and died of neglect. The daughter left her 91-year-old mother alone while she vacationed for two weeks in the United States. She was well aware that her mother would not be able to wash or change her clothes for the entire two weeks and so she left her casseroles on her bedside table to be eaten within two days, and fruit, biscuits and tinned food.

The daughter also left her a toilet in her room but she admitted that her mother would be unable to empty the toilet and dispose of any waste. She also purchased and fitted her mother with incontinence pads before her departure. The elderly woman’s great nephew came to check on her but the mother insisted she was fine and that she would contact him if she needed anything. The medical examiner stated that the mother had suffered an untreated broken ankle that impaired her mobility greatly.

The woman who was supposed to be taking care of her mother should be charged with neglect among many other things. If family members are overwhelmed by the task of being a caretaker, they should hire someone to take care of their loved one or submit them into some type of living facility where they will always have someone to care for them. If it is too late, your family should seek justice for the caretaker’s neglect and shameful behavior as soon as possible.

Elderly Woman Suffers Injuries from Home Invasion

Home invasions occur everyday, even in the safest of neighborhoods. While most break-in’s occur through a window or the front door, 9% of break in’s happen in the garage. It is terrifying to imagine anyone trying to break into your home and pose a danger to you and your family. In San Antonio, TX an elderly woman was caught off guard by a man who entered her home.

The man entered through her open garage and tied the 69-year-old woman with duct tape. The suspect robbed the woman of money, jewelry and a 2007 Mercury Milan. The crime shocked nearby neighbors because it occurred in broad daylight. Four other residents have recently reported also being burglarized. Several other nearby residents have contacted the San Antonio Police Department in order to request more police presence in the neighborhood.

No matter how many safety precautions you take there is usually a place in your home that is left vulnerable to a break in. Elderly individuals are more susceptible to these dangers because they are easy targets for any criminal. Most elderly are unable to protect themselves physically and many live alone. This poor woman was victimized and then robbed of her belongings. If she had a caretaker that left her unattended, the caretaker could be held responsible for the trauma and financial loss of this incident.  The caretaker would be held responsible for this act of neglect. If the burglar is caught, he can be held responsible the emotional damage and loss as well.

Man Sentenced To 3 Years for Elder Abuse

The website sfappeal.com is reporting that a San Francisco man – 50-year-old Michael Croslin – is facing 3 years in prison after a conviction of elder abuse and assault. The jury in the case deliberated for two days and the trial itself lasted for two weeks before the sentence was handed down to Croslin.

According to the report, the original crime occurred on October 23 of last year in the victim’s home. The report states that an argument ensued and Croslin attacked a 67-year-old man with his cane. The victim suffered several injuries including injuries to the head. He was still able to contact a neighbor and the police were subsequently notified.

Unfortunately, elder abuse often occurs in varying degrees of severity. In many cases, elder abuse victims are robbed of their finances and their civil rights. However, in other more severe cases, the victims are brutally attacked and often suffer very serious injuries at the hands of their attackers. In any case, elder abuse is a crime that should never occur and any perpetrator of the crime should face the highest possible punishment for that crime. Nobody should ever become a victim of elder abuse in any situation. If you know someone who has been victimized in an elder abuse incident, you can contact Solomon and Relihan to get information on how you can get justice for this crime.

Elderly Man Gets Second Degree Burns from Phoenix Sidewalk

Summers in Phoenix can cause a number of different health afflictions. The police and fire department receive calls on a daily basis with heat related situations. Most of these accidents are preventable. Elderly are especially affected with heat related injuries, due to their various health afflictions and own vulnerability. On Saturday July 17, a 78 year-old man was taken to a Phoenix hospital suffering second degree burns on his feet.

Around 1pm the man ran outside barefoot trying to catch up to the mail carrier and when he tried to return to his home he fell and tried to crawl back on his hands and knees. Two women found him and carried him onto the grass and then into his home. The man seemed to not realize the severity of his own injuries. With the heat at over a hundred degrees in Phoenix, the pavement can reach up to 140 degrees. The man was later transferred to The Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center suffering second degree burns on his feet.

These situations can occur as a result of careless mistakes. In most they are only accidents that were the result of a rash decision without thinking. Yet there can be many explanations for this type of scenario. A mix up in medication could have left the man feeling disoriented, he may not have been properly monitored by a caretaker, or he could have suffered an improperly diagnosed health affliction. In those cases, there are negligent parties responsible for his burns. If you were involved in an accident that may have been caused by another person’s negligence then contacting an Arizona personal injury attorney is your best option for compensation.
