Elderly Woman Gets Back $2,000 from Scammers, Task Force Helps
A 79-year-old woman got back $2,000 thanks to the assistance of an elder abuse task force in Flint, MI. The woman originally lost the money after two employees from a tree trimming service stole the money from her. The woman was allegedly approached by the two men who were persistent in convincing the woman that she should take their service. They were able to convince her that her neighbors requested them to offer her the service.
Given the fact that the woman likes her neighbors, she conceded to the service and provided a $200 initial deposit to pay for it. In April when the men returned, she gave them a check for $1,975. When the men attempted to cash it and found there were insufficient funds in the account to cash the check, they then forced the woman to go with them to the bank and empty out her bank account. When the elderly woman’s daughter discovered the transactions, which included an additional check for $1,245, she called the Genesee County Elder Abuse Task Force who helped the elderly woman reclaim all her money.
In the report, the woman stated that she was unsure whether she would get help from the Elder Abuse Task Force. She believed the incident would not be big enough to “cause a blip on the radar.” This is the case for many elder abuse and neglect victims across the nation. Most believe that they may not get the help they feel they need in order to remedy the situation they are currently in. For that reason, they choose not to contact anybody for help despite their desperate need for help. This should never be a thought that crosses and elderly person’s mind. They should always be assured that if they need help in any way, they will receive the help they need and deserve.
