Man Charged With Elder Abuse in Florida

A man in Coconut Creek, FL has been charged with felony elder abuse in connection with the death of his 62-year-old brother. The 62-year-old man was reportedly sleeping on a couch in his own waste for about three months until his death last week. The man was discovered emaciated covered with small sores all over his body.

The couch he was laying in had been infested with bed bugs. The official cause of death has not been determined as yet.

The judge presiding over 63-year-old Joseph Siciliano’s bond hearing stated there may be more severe charges filed against him possibly including a charge of manslaughter. The public defender representing Siciliano argued that he will not be given any such charges since he is also impaired due to Parkinson’s disease, which could have restricted him from providing care for his younger brother. The medical examiner stated toxicology and other examinations would have to be conducted to determine if the natural diseases Siciliano’s younger brother suffered were caused by medications, drugs or alcohol.

There are many ways to prevent elder abuse whether it is at the victim’s home or at a nursing home facility. There is always a case where someone is physically unable to provide care for their elderly family members. A judge will determine whether or not this is one of those cases where Siciliano was physically unable to provide care for his younger brother due to suffering Parkinson’s. However, in any situation where you are physically incapable of providing care for a loved one, it is very important to contact a nursing home facility or some other medical care facility that can provide the care your loved ones require.
